Purple Image

HAPPY NEW YEAR, Y'ALL!!

After noticing that my earlier post of the Demon Fuzz album has received the most downloads of all my posts, I've decided to put up another in a similar vein. If you haven't heard Demon Fuzz yet, think of something like Jimi Hendrix fused with P-Funk.

In 1970, the group Purple Image released their only album on the obscure Map City label. Purple Image's eponymous self-titled album merged a strong blend of soul funk and psych rock to considerable effect.

If you dig this stuff, let me know, 'cuz I've got more albums in a similar style where that came from! (ie. Black Merda, Fugi, Eddie Hazel, Cymande, Maximillian, Cane & Able, The Politicians, Bloodstone, Mandrill, Osibisa, Monomono...and so on!)

Enjoy!

HELLO THERE! I REALLY DON'T KNOW A WHOLE LOT ABOUT THE PURPLE IMAGE ALBUM, BUT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME. MY FATHER, RICHARD PAYNE WAS THE DRUMMER ON THE ALBUM. MY SISTERS MOTHER, DIANE DUNLAP WAS ONE OF THE SINGERS. I MUST SAY I HAVE NEVER EVEN SEEN THE ALBUM, BUT I KNEW ABOUT IT. THANK YOU FOR HAVING IT AVAILABLE. TAKE CARE

A great reminder of the days when music became less categorisable, rather than more so. Thanks for getting this out there!

your definitely right. i like eddie hazel, you wonder why these rockers are not well known, i'm thinking it had something to d with music industry politics, alot of albums at this time were psychadelic funk, i dont know why that style died out under flippin synthesizers, bring in more man

This is one of the classics of this genre. Scorpion is the ohter great one (and only two of the players are black). Warlock is overrated and not very good. Prog-sludge very much like the way lame Next Morning album. Demon Fuzz is great, but it's much more afro-centric, as is MonoMono - but both have good fuzz guitar parts. Black Merda's first album is more blues-rock based, but their second, "Long Burn the Fire" is kiiler black psych-funk. I highly recommend Eddie Fisher's "Next 100 Years" album. That's about the closest you can get to the Hendrix side of funk - that's an amazing slab of wax.

Oh - stay away from that "Shades of Black Lightening" album on Tower - total blue-eyed soul - no psych or funk.

Anyway, just my opinion. This is a groovy blog. Keep it going!
