NOFX

This is NOT a real NOFX album.

I put together this bootleg, compilation, mixtape, promotional sampler, whatever you wanna call it. haha It's a fun mix of some reggae-influenced songs by the almighty NOFX. A lil' collection compiled by yours truly. ;) I got the idea for this one watching NOFX play a Warped Tour show in Cleveland a few years ago, and Fat Mike opened the show by saying "Who wants to hear some punk rock?!" and of course the crowd goes bananas, and he says "well, Too bad! We're gonna play some bad reggae!", and they did...well sorta...I enjoyed it. haha

If you listen to this collection on iTunes, and click on the little arrow in the album artwork window, you can view each song's orginal album...Go get them all.

If you haven't seen NOFX, there is something wrong with you, and you need to do yourself a favour and do so. :)

Enjoy!

Imani Coppola

After I saw 2 live Peeping Tom shows during the course of last year, I was super stoked to hear the new Imani Coppola recordings. I've known about her before she toured as back-up singer with Mike Patton's Peeping Tom project, but after seeing her live with them, I was really impressed by this lady!

So last week I stumbled upon "The Black & White Album", her 2007 release on Patton's label, Ipecac Records. And this album is DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE!! I'm loving it!! I really can't say much else about it. I don't even know what type of music genre the entire album would be classified under, as it's all over the place. Just great songs!

Just check it out...

Now. :)

Bad Brains

"Quickness", released in 1989, is the fourth full-length studio album from hardcore punk and reggae pioneers Bad Brains. With tracks like "With The Quickness", "Soul Craft", "Don't Blow Bubbles", "The Prophet's Eye"...they make this one of my favourite Bad Brains albums.

Enjoy!

Andrew W.K.

When this album came out in 2001, obviously I was curious about the music based on the cover art (I'm a sucker for a good album cover), but for whatever reasons, I wasn't ready to fully dig the music on the album...I didn't get it.

A few years ago a finally gave "I Get Wet" by Andrew W.K. a full-attention thorough listen....and I loved it!!

I was also swayed to the ways of Mr. W.K. after my band played the same Wakestock festival at Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada. He really put on a great show! I also remember seeing him on the same flight that the band and I once took from SXSW in Texas to LA. A few of us thought it was him, but the others weren't convinced. So on our ride out of the airport we passed him waiting for his ride, and I stuck my head out the window with a "Andrew!", and sure enough he turns his head and waves in our direction with a smile. We all laughed in the car, "It WAS him!". hahaha

To this day, this is now one of my favourite "party albums" of all time. Give'r a go...It's very effective! :)

Remember this video for "She Is Beautiful"?!:

DOWNLOAD> ANDREW W.K. - I Get Wet

P.S. Unfortunately, I have yet to obtain copies of any of his other albums. If anyone has anything, or can send me in the right direction, that'd rock!

P.P.S. This is great too! A clip from Andrew W.K.'s 4 hour lecture at New York University. This clip is about the paradox of partying. haha:

Skindred: Roots Rock Riot!

The second album from Skindred just came out this week. I bought it, and I've been kiiiiilling it. The lead singer, Benji, has the wickedest voice. Check out this video for the first single, "Rat Race"...The video is just a plain and simple "performace in a box" type of thing, but the song is the dopest!

Go get this album!

P.S. If you're not familiar with the 1st Skindred album, or the Dub War albums...Check them out too!

Skindred a'wikkid bwoy!

This album came out in 2004, and I have been killing it since.

These guys were once known as DubWar. Skindred has a similiar sound to DubWar, but Skindred is much heavier. Skindred have this wikkidly heavy, dancehall/ragga/metal/punk sound that I just love. I have added a few extra bonus tracks to this download for y'all to hear: a drum'n'bass remix of "Pressure", a Peter Tosh cover of "Steppin' Razor", and the video for "Set It Off". These guys apparently have a new album coming out soon too, which I will eagerly await!

ENJOY!

It's The Infectious Grooves!

The Infectious Grooves are a funk metal band led by Suicidal Tendencies frontman Mike Muir. It also features former Excel guitarist Adam Siegel, ex-Suicidal Tendencies, now Metallica, bassist Robert Trujillo, and ex-Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins.

Though Muir's sense of humor was often obvious with Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves often brought out a goofier type of humor through their albums' comedy skits by a reptilian lover named Sarsippius.

This is their debut album, released in 1991, "The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move....It's The Infectious Grooves".

Deadly material. One of my classic favourites!

If you didn't know, now you know....ENJOY!

The Salads are classic rock, yo!

This past May 24th, 2007, The Salads opened the evening of the 30th anniversary party for Q107, Toronto's classic rock radio station. The headliners were a reunited Max Webster (featuring Kim Mitchell, of course), and other acts included Honeymoon Suite, Alannah Myles, Sass Jordan, Goddo, and David Wilcox. Quite the Canadian rock extravaganza! And the entire show was live to air! We also brought The Salads' original drummer, Grant Taylor, back for this special show, and had our new drummer, Legs, play our only original tune at the end of our set. It was quite the experience!

So a friend found a recording of the show online, and I thought I'd put it up here for those of you who missed it. When I find out if we are "allowed" to add it to our website (www.thesalads.com), I'll post it there too. ;) It's just great because we may not do that again, and if you listen to the very end of the recording, you can hear the audio from a video they played of Kim Mitchell giving props to The Salads...What an honour from such a cool dude!

Check out our ass-kickin' classic rock medley here for now....Enjoy!

P.S. By the way, that picture of the crowd was taken during our set, and the 2 circles on the photo are to pin-point the location of The Salads' good friend and albums/website designer, Dennis Vidaic, and his friend, Paul. Dennis sent me this picture... Thanks, Dennis! ;)

Headstrong (R.I.P.)

Back in 2002, we (The Salads) were looking for someone to record our upcoming cd, "Fold A to B'. After hearing the new major label debut album from our good friends in a heavy rock band called Headstrong (fka Bomb32), we were very impressed by the sound of their recordings. We soon discovered that a man by the name of Dan Brodbeck had recorded their album in London, Ontario at EMAC studios....and after contacting Dan ourselves, we also discovered that he was already a fan of The Salads, and very interested in recording our new material. We were stoked! We ended up recording both "Fold A to B" (2003), and "The Big Picture" (2006) with Dan at EMAC.

So if it wasn't for this amazing album by Headstrong, both of those Salads cds may not have ended up like they did. Unfortunately, after some lengthy touring through the US, and plenty of label/management problems, Headstrong packed it in and called it quits before a sophomore cd could be completed. On the upside of things, the band DID record 5 demos for new songs at EMAC before things fell apart.

I really believe this album didn't get the push it deserved, because it's so good, and it seems like so few people are even aware of it's existence. So here you go.....Headstrong's debut, self-titled cd...PLUS the final 5 demos!

Enjoy!

Fishbone : The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx

My first blog on here on Thursday, December 14, 2006 was entitled "Fishbone is red hot!", and it included a download of their cover of Sly Stone's "Everybody Is A Star" from this same album "FISHBONE & The Familyhood Nextperience Presents The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx" released on Hollywood Records in 2000.

I've discovered over the years that even many a Fishbone fan is not really familiar with this album. This album was Fishbone's final major label attempt, and Hollywood dropped the ball BIG TIME. Not a single video for any song on the album, and in my opinion, every song on the album is a potential single! So on went the 'Bone with their indie label success!

If you don't already have this album in your collection, you MUST add it NOW:

RACE. 1997.

So as some of you may have noticed, I've been getting more in the mood of linking y'all with full albums instead of just single songs...so it's safe to say, you'll be seeing more of that from this music blog o' mine. Keep on the look-out....I've got a crazy, diverse collection of cds!

Here's one that is long since discontinued. The band is called RACE. They were basically from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. I saw them live countless times in Toronto, and they fuckin' forced the attention of everyone in the room...ALL the time. So dope! I also remember hanging out with a few of the guys in the band at a friend's BBQ a few years ago. Great dudes! This self-titled album is an old-school Canadian ragga-metal masterpiece....Take yourself back...

For some reason, there really isn't anything online about Race or this album. If you can find anything...pictures specifically...drop me a fuckin' line! :)

Have a listen to it, and say 'Thank you, Unca D'...Enjoy!

Bad Blood (R.I.P.)

When I first moved to Toronto, I immediately started checking out local bands. One of the first bands I really latched on to was a band called Bad Blood. Five cool dudes who played fun, heavy music...and their shows were a blast! Through the Blood, I was also introduced to many other bands like Fence (aka Twinfold), Black Belt Jones (RIP), Race (RIP), Semi-Auto Reflex (RIP)...and of course, The Salads!

I also did a few show posters for the Blood, and the graphic design work for the cds "Amplify", "Nobody Likes Me", and the "Ring'N'Ears compilation"...while I was still learning graphic design in college!

On May 14th, 1998, Bad Blood played a show at CBGBs....and I was there, on the road with them to a few gigs in and around New York, helping them out...being the "Road Dawg" (my aka at the time). Fortunately the entire show at CBGBs was recorded through the soundboard. If you listen to the beginning of "What Don't Kill", you can hear the boys dedicate it to "Road Dawg"...Funny shit. Very fun times...Sleeping over at Richie's (original Sick Of It All bass player)...meeting Scott Ian @ CBGBs....driving by Q-Tip on the street and asking him when the new Tribe cd would be released and he yelled back the date....drinking with Jay (from Stem...Where is that dude these days?!)..Good times!

On May 23rd, 1998, I saw The Salads open up for Bad Blood at the Elmocambo. I thought, "My jam band could play a few shows with these guys..That'd be cool!". Shortly thereafter we did indeed play a few shows together....and I became the lead singer of The Salads...still to this day! What a ride it's been...and what a ride it's gonna be! Hawt Damn!

Recently, one of Bad Blood's singers, Bill, posted a site with Bad Blood's entire catalog (and more), all as free downloads!
The Bad Blood guys were always really good to me (well, most of the time. haha), so... Cheers to them!
Enjoy these recordings!

P.S. If you're looking for more heavy music, check out my latest "Good Music" podcast! It's got some ballssssss. ;)

Weeeeeeeeeen!

I've been a Ween fan for some time now...even after I came home one day in 1996 with "12 Golden Country Greats" happily clenched in my hands....not really taking the title of this new Ween cd seriously. haha Needless to say, I didn't listen to that cd too much then...but I love it now!

Ween have always been really kool with spreading their live recordings around, and they've had some great shows! I recently found this 36 song show of theirs from New Jersey, 2001...and it sounds pretty good! They do a lot of their classic material.

Check it out (and more!!) here:

Fu fan for life.

Now that I think about it, I think I started listening to Fu Manchu around the same time that I started smoking pot. 1995. The same year Fu Manchu's album "Daredevil" was released. The song "Sleestak" was the theme song to many a session. haha

The following year they released "In Search Of...", and on the tour in support of that, I managed to find my way to a show with some buddies at The Embassy in London....a tiny little hole of rawk. We loved it. After the show we smoked some hash with Ruben & Eddie (former guitarist & drummer) up in one of the dirty rooms upstairs...serving them their first "bottle tokes", as hash was apparently non-existent back in Cali. As young kids, we thought this was thee kooooooolest thing ever. haha

A few years ago I took my wife to see Fu Manchu for her first time, on their "Start The Machine" tour. She digs the band, the venue was great (Mod Club, Toronto), and she loved the fact that their was never a line up to get into the women's washroom!

The guys just released their latest masterpiece, "We Must Obey". I really dig it! When I first heard the song "Hung Out To Dry", I didn't even make it past the first few guitar riffs before I was starting the song over again. SO GOOD! The sounds on the guitars...the drums...everything...SO GOOD!

Check it out....Go see 'em live though! Stoner rawk at it's finest. ;)

Year Of The Dragon is Nutteriffik!

Who is "Year Of The Dragon"?

Year Of The Dragon features guitarist Spacey T (formerly of Fishbone and black metal pioneers Sound Barrier) and vocalist Dirty Walt (a founding member of Fishbone), in addition to Rodcore on second vocals, Lonnie Jones on drums and Stick 3X on bass. Year Of The Dragon is basically some rippin', funky-ass metal; Very similar to that of Fishbone.

After having the fortune of touring as an opening act for Fishbone during the last tour that Spacey T and Dirty Walt did with Fishbone, I really grew a liking to Spacey and Walt. SUPER cool dudes! So it's great to hear them making more stellar recordings with other talented musicians!

Year Of The Dragon's first 6 song CD, "A Time To Love Is A Time To Bleed" (released in 2006) is an easy one to find in the Los Angeles/San Francisco area...but no so much anywhere else (other than on cdbaby.com). If you can find it, it's worth getting!

This track is one of my favourites...

RX Bandits did it again!

When I first heard the RX Bandits 2003 album, "The Resignation", I was thoroughly impressed....and I played that album over and over so many times that I had to put it down for a while. haha

So needless to say, I was eagerly awaiting their follow-up album. In August of 2006, they finally released the album, "...And The Battle Begun". This album didn't hit me over the head as hard as "The Resignation" did upon first listen, but after a few more listens it grew on me fast. The entire album is quite good!

The one track that continues to stand out for me is one called "Only For The Night". What an awesome song! I even emailed Matt Embree (RX Bandits' singer) to tell him so.....and he emailed me back with a pleasant 'thank you' and informed me that they would be touring back through Canada again soon. I then checked their website and I noticed that they are going to be back in Toronto on March 9th at The Opera House. If all goes well this time, I'll be there with bells on!

P.S. Happy Valentine's Day to all the lovers out there! Time to make some luuuuuuuuuuv. :)

Infectious is infectious!

One of my favourite albums (and groups) has to be "The Plague That Makes Your Booty Move" by Infectious Grooves.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Groove Family Cyco...

Infectious Grooves are a funk metal band led by Suicidal Tendencies frontman Mike Muir. It also features ex-Suicidal Tendencies, now Metallica, bassist Robert Trujillo, and ex-Jane's Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins.... Heavy duty shit!

Another reason why I wanted to add this one up here is because this album is not available (to the best of my knowledge) in Canada right now for some reason. I love it, and think it's a classic! So check this out...
