For starters, check out this mixtape of "what's inside her head" and get on her vibe... then check out her dope new video...

Stevie Wonder

Now, I'm not always a huge fan of live recordings, but some are just AWESOME. If it's a good soundboard recording, and the performance is good, etc., then I'm with it.

This live show by, the man, Stevie Wonder, is a FANTASTIC show AND recording. It was recorded live, with an audience, at Abbey Road Studios in London, England on November 9th, 2005.

Stevie even performs "Isn't She Lovely" with the song's muse, his daughter, Aisha, as she sings back to him, "Isn't he lovely!". Classic stuff!

Check it out...So big it's in 2 parts....ENJOY!

Amp Fiddler + Sly & Robbie

This is some HOT shit y'all. Serious business here, as most of us would expect from Sly & Robbie. I've been listening to Amp Fiddler's stuff for a few years now too, so this is a pleasant surprise collaboration! A note to the reggae heads: Because this is Sly & Robbie, it is not necessarily straight reggae/dub style. It''s more on the futuristic/soul/r+b/electronic type o'thing. ;) ..but of course there's a surprise or two towards the end!

Just listen to it...and support it if you love it!

Enjoy...

Mista D's GOOD MUSIC Podcasts

Back in August, 2006, I started a podcast called MISTA D'S GOOD MUSIC PODCAST. I did 8 episodes and posted them on podomatic.com. Then they told me that was all the space I had left to post, so I started a new page at mypodcast.com, made podcast #9, and now I can't even access the page as it's been randomly shut down. That's when I decided to start the BLOG COMPILATIONS, of which I've done one so far (see here). The 2nd one is on it's way! Stay tuned!

And in the meantime, here are some direct links to my previous podcasts, if you haven't already heard them...

ENJOY!

Imani Coppola

After I saw 2 live Peeping Tom shows during the course of last year, I was super stoked to hear the new Imani Coppola recordings. I've known about her before she toured as back-up singer with Mike Patton's Peeping Tom project, but after seeing her live with them, I was really impressed by this lady!

So last week I stumbled upon "The Black & White Album", her 2007 release on Patton's label, Ipecac Records. And this album is DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE!! I'm loving it!! I really can't say much else about it. I don't even know what type of music genre the entire album would be classified under, as it's all over the place. Just great songs!

Just check it out...

Now. :)

Enjoy!

Maximillian

I decided to post this rare album after receiving some positive comments on a few older albums I've posted with a similar sound. One comment in particular on the Purple Image post from Monica Payne-Torain said...

HELLO THERE! I REALLY DON'T KNOW A WHOLE LOT ABOUT THE PURPLE IMAGE ALBUM, BUT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME. MY FATHER, RICHARD PAYNE WAS THE DRUMMER ON THE ALBUM. MY SISTERS MOTHER, DIANE DUNLAP WAS ONE OF THE SINGERS. I MUST SAY I HAVE NEVER EVEN SEEN THE ALBUM, BUT I KNEW ABOUT IT. THANK YOU FOR HAVING IT AVAILABLE. TAKE CARE

I love that shit. Glad to get that album to you, Monica!

This one is a rare, heavy, Hendrix-inspired, psychedelic, funk-rock album from 1969 by a group called Maximillian. This is the only album of theirs I've ever heard...and that's all I really know about this one, unfortunately. If you have more info, please drop me a comment and let me know. Otherwise...

ENJOY!

400% Dynamite!

The Soul Jazz Records label has released 6 volumes of this "Dynamite" series of reggae, ska, soul, rocksteady, funk, and dub classics from Jamaica. Here is volume 4 (aka 400%), which is one of my favourites! If you dig this one, definitely check out the other 5, as they're very similar and wikkid collections. The guys/djs behind this collection are rad dudes too. I few years back I had the opportunity to share some Canadian homegrown with these lovely English blokes while they were on a DJ tour performing in Toronto. Good times! Can't wait for them to come back!

Diiiiiiig and enjoy...

I don't know if MuchMusic or MTV are playing this or not, but everyone who considers themselves a fan of music needs to see this. After you watch it, check out this link to see the covers side by side with stills from the video. Very cool stuff...and GREAT albums!

Baby Huey

The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend, was released in 1971, after the death of their lead singer. Produced by Curtis Mayfield, the album featured several Mayfield compositions, as well as a cover of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and two original compositions by Ramey. The album did not sell well upon its original release, and was largely forgotten by the mainstream. Today, the album is considered a classic of its period.

Several songs from The Baby Huey Story, including "Hard Times", "Listen to Me", and "Mighty Mighty Children", have been frequently sampled by hip hop producers since the 1980s. "Hard Times" alone has been sampled by dozens of artists, including Ice Cube ("The Birth", Death Certificate), A Tribe Called Quest ("Can I Kick It?", People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm), Ghostface Killah ("Buck 50", Supreme Clientele), and others. Many people, including the Babysitters themselves, see The Baby Huey Story as a significant and important influence on hip hop music.

One of my favourite parts of this album is part way through "A Change Is Going To Come", Baby Huey makes a lil' stoney speech....The perfect song to burn one and zone out to! For reeeeeal, check it out....

*(go HERE for more details on Baby Huey @ Wikipedia)

Now check out this classic album...

Soulive

I picked up Soulive's "Next" album back in 2002, and really dug it....I particularly killed that Ani Difranco cover sung by Dave Matthews....phewww....deadly. :) Well, now Soulive has a new lead singer instead of various guest vocalists...and this new guy kills it!

I was really happy to see that they released a new one in 2007. After listening to the first 2 tracks I was already impressed by this new direction, and I sat up straight in my chair to listen to the rest of the album. And HOLY SHIT. I'm loving this album!

Highlight tracks for me so far: "Don't Tell Me", "Callin", "Morning Light", "Yeah Yeah", "If This World Was A Song".....aww man, the whole album is reeally dope y'all! haha

Big ups to Blak's Lair for posting this one!

Purple Image

HAPPY NEW YEAR, Y'ALL!!

After noticing that my earlier post of the Demon Fuzz album has received the most downloads of all my posts, I've decided to put up another in a similar vein. If you haven't heard Demon Fuzz yet, think of something like Jimi Hendrix fused with P-Funk.

In 1970, the group Purple Image released their only album on the obscure Map City label. Purple Image's eponymous self-titled album merged a strong blend of soul funk and psych rock to considerable effect.

If you dig this stuff, let me know, 'cuz I've got more albums in a similar style where that came from! (ie. Black Merda, Fugi, Eddie Hazel, Cymande, Maximillian, Cane & Able, The Politicians, Bloodstone, Mandrill, Osibisa, Monomono...and so on!)

Enjoy!

Eddie Hazel

Eddie Hazel was born on April 10, 1950, and passed on December 23, 1992. He was a pioneering and influential guitarist in early funk music in the United States, most famous for his lead guitar work with George Clinton and Funkadelic. In 1977, Eddie released his debut solo album on Warner Brothers entitled "Game, Dames & Guitar Thangs". He has been featured on a number of lists of greatest guitarists of all time, and is highly respected among many guitarists of all genres. One of my favourite groups, Ween, recorded a tribute to him called "A Tear for Eddie" on their album Chocolate And Cheese, imitating his unique soloing style; A super dope track! When my band, The Salads, was on tour with Fishbone in 2002, I remember their guitarist at the time, Spacey T, talking a lot about Eddie Hazel's influence on him.

Anyhoo, if you're a guitarist, or just a lover of good funk music, you have to check this album out! Enjoy!

P.S. This download does not include the second last song on the album, "From The Bottom Of My Soul", as it's over 12 minutes long and wouldn't fit in the zip. If you dig this album and would like that song to complete the album, leave me a comment and I'll post it for you.

Bobby McFerrin

This kat is THE MAN.

I have most of Bobby McFerrin's catalogue, so it was tough to pick one album to post on here...but I realized that I always find myself going back to this particular gem from 1990 quite often. I've been listening to a lot of his music again lately, especially the strictly acapella tracks....DEADLY stuff!

So I thought I'd share some with y'all....Check it out...and lemme know what you think...

Cymande! (pt.1)

This one goes out to those you of who commented me about Demon Fuzz......

Cymande were an eclectic band who released a few albums in the early 1970's. They arrived in London, England from Guyana and Jamaica and developed a subtle, deep funk style heavily influenced by calypso rhythms, jazz, African music, and American soul. By the mid '70s the band members were going their separate ways. It wasn't until 20 years later that they reaped any financial rewards, as their music became a popular source for samplers. Perhaps the band's best known recording is the soulful dancefloor groove "Bra", later sampled by the American hip-hop group De La Soul in their song "Change In Speak" (from "3 Feet High & Rising"), and by Def Jef on "Give It Here", and by DJ Kool on "Let Me Clear My Throat". The Fugees sampled "Dove" for the title track of their second album, "The Score" in 1996. The list goes on and on, and it's obvious why: Cymande are the shit. :)

Here are their 1st 2 full albums, "Cymande" (1972) and "Second Time Around" (1973).
(If anyone is interested in the 3rd Cymande album, and some bonus tracks, let me know!)
