Adele

When my wife brought Adele's album "19" to my attention, I was interested, but not as much as I am now that Mick Boogie re-introduced it to me as "1988"...and knocked it out of the park! This mixtape/remix-project is superb. I'm sure my wife will understand when she hears this one too. haha Check it out...

Asher Roth

I don't know how I didn't catch word on this kat until now, but anyhow, thanks to GetRightMusic.com (my favourite place to get Hip-Hop mixtapes), and their Top 10 of 2008 list, I found this mixtape. I'm diggin' Asher's flows and deliveries...He's dope! And since his debut album is set to be released in March 2009, he is proclaiming himself famous by April. As bold of a statement as that may be, I kinda don't doubt him. :)

Check this EPK too..

NOFX

This is NOT a real NOFX album.

I put together this bootleg, compilation, mixtape, promotional sampler, whatever you wanna call it. haha It's a fun mix of some reggae-influenced songs by the almighty NOFX. A lil' collection compiled by yours truly. ;) I got the idea for this one watching NOFX play a Warped Tour show in Cleveland a few years ago, and Fat Mike opened the show by saying "Who wants to hear some punk rock?!" and of course the crowd goes bananas, and he says "well, Too bad! We're gonna play some bad reggae!", and they did...well sorta...I enjoyed it. haha

If you listen to this collection on iTunes, and click on the little arrow in the album artwork window, you can view each song's orginal album...Go get them all.

If you haven't seen NOFX, there is something wrong with you, and you need to do yourself a favour and do so. :)

Merry Christmas!

Now, in my opinion, there's a lot of corny Christmas music out there, and it's pretty tough to find a full album of Christmas music that isn't cheesy and annoying. I put together this collection of songs on behalf of my family as a gift to you and yours! Feel free to share this cd with your family and friends, and hopefully we can all have happy ears this holiday season! haha

HAPPY HOHO!!

P.S. If you listen to this album in iTunes, you can view the original album cover for each song by clicking on the little arrow in the artwork window while the song is playing.

Amp Fiddler + Sly & Robbie

This is some HOT shit y'all. Serious business here, as most of us would expect from Sly & Robbie. I've been listening to Amp Fiddler's stuff for a few years now too, so this is a pleasant surprise collaboration! A note to the reggae heads: Because this is Sly & Robbie, it is not necessarily straight reggae/dub style. It''s more on the futuristic/soul/r+b/electronic type o'thing. ;) ..but of course there's a surprise or two towards the end!

Just listen to it...and support it if you love it!

You Have A Choice.

This is a new single that was just released by a group of Canadian artists who have joined together to record a song sponsored by Avaaz, titled “You Have a Choice,” to mobilize and inspire Canadians to stop a Harper majority from devastating our climate by voting strategically where we live for the candidate most likely to defeat the Conservative candidate.

The Canadian artists who rallied together for this effort, besides myself, include: K-OS, Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies, Ben Kowalewicz of Billy Talent, Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace, Sarah Harmer, Hawksley Workman, Jason Collett of Broken Social Scene, Ian Lefeuvre of The Hundreds and Thousands, and the Arts Offstage Choir under the direction of David Reed.

You can hear me singing along with Benny Talent in the first half of the bridge, and backing up K-OS on the first chorus, and then again on my own during a part of the last chorus.

Check out the song, and help us save the planet!

Mista D's GOOD MUSIC Podcasts

Back in August, 2006, I started a podcast called MISTA D'S GOOD MUSIC PODCAST. I did 8 episodes and posted them on podomatic.com. Then they told me that was all the space I had left to post, so I started a new page at mypodcast.com, made podcast #9, and now I can't even access the page as it's been randomly shut down. That's when I decided to start the BLOG COMPILATIONS, of which I've done one so far (see here). The 2nd one is on it's way! Stay tuned!

And in the meantime, here are some direct links to my previous podcasts, if you haven't already heard them...

Outkast VS NIN

I found this dope mash-up mixtape, presented by Ill Poetic, mixing together Outkast and Nine Inch Nails. With NIN's music, it obviously gives Big Boi and Andre's voices darker sounding instrumentals to run along-side, which is cool, and well worth a few listens if you're a fan of either group! Very nicely put together. Check it out...

Imani Coppola

After I saw 2 live Peeping Tom shows during the course of last year, I was super stoked to hear the new Imani Coppola recordings. I've known about her before she toured as back-up singer with Mike Patton's Peeping Tom project, but after seeing her live with them, I was really impressed by this lady!

So last week I stumbled upon "The Black & White Album", her 2007 release on Patton's label, Ipecac Records. And this album is DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPE!! I'm loving it!! I really can't say much else about it. I don't even know what type of music genre the entire album would be classified under, as it's all over the place. Just great songs!

Dubxanne

I just bumped into this pleasant surprise today. Big ups to Spliff for hosting it (and MANY other reggae gems!).

"The Police In Dub" by Dubxanne was released this year on Echo Beach Records. It is mainly dub versions of Police classics, but also features a few wicked vocalists like Big Youth, Eased from Seeed, and Ranking Roger, to name a few. This release to me is very much in the same vein as what the Easy Star All-Stars did to Pink Floyd and Radiohead through "Dub Side Of The Moon" and "Radiodread". Deadly stuff and nicely executed!!

Maximillian

I decided to post this rare album after receiving some positive comments on a few older albums I've posted with a similar sound. One comment in particular on the Purple Image post from Monica Payne-Torain said...

HELLO THERE! I REALLY DON'T KNOW A WHOLE LOT ABOUT THE PURPLE IMAGE ALBUM, BUT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME. MY FATHER, RICHARD PAYNE WAS THE DRUMMER ON THE ALBUM. MY SISTERS MOTHER, DIANE DUNLAP WAS ONE OF THE SINGERS. I MUST SAY I HAVE NEVER EVEN SEEN THE ALBUM, BUT I KNEW ABOUT IT. THANK YOU FOR HAVING IT AVAILABLE. TAKE CARE

I love that shit. Glad to get that album to you, Monica!

This one is a rare, heavy, Hendrix-inspired, psychedelic, funk-rock album from 1969 by a group called Maximillian. This is the only album of theirs I've ever heard...and that's all I really know about this one, unfortunately. If you have more info, please drop me a comment and let me know. Otherwise...

The Makeshift Heroes

I first heard of these guys through my friends in the Cheap Suits. Then I saw them live, and was very impressed by these talented highschool kids who could lay down some good ska....and pull it off live!

I think these 2 EPs that the band released, "Not So Fast" in 2005, and "Last Call" in 2006, are a great full-length album put together...so here you go!

Big thanks to Branks for the approval to put these up for y'all. Go check out his new band with former Makeshift singer, Ben, called Dinosaur Bones. Different sound than Makeshift, but cool stuff still.

Max Romeo

It seems as though the reggae albums I'm posting are the most popular ones on this blog, so here's another reggae classic!

This album, released in 1976, features vocalist Max Romeo's finest recordings with Lee "Scratch" Perry at the controls. It also contains the classic song "I Chase The Devil" which was sampled by Kanye West on Jay-Z's track "Lucifer", and by The Prodigy for their hit "Out Of Space". It is also featured on the reggae radio station K-JAH Radio West in a popular videogame Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, released in October 2004.

"War Ina Babylon" is definitely a must-have for any reggae collectors!

Dennis Brown

This classic gem from legendary reggae voice, Dennis Brown, was released in 1972/1973, and is approx. his 4th album released. It has a few cover songs done in a reggae style that some may enjoy like "Dock Of The Bay" and "Black Magic Woman". And other classic tunes like "Look What You're Doing To Me" and "You're No Good". Even though this sounds like it was dubbed from the original vinyl, it is still a great listen for those who appreciate Mr.Brown's deadly vocals....and the sound of a record on a turntable!

Happy 4/20 from The Salads!

I realized recently that I had yet to post "The Big Remixes" album by my band, The Salads, on this blog; And what a better date to do so! ;)

This album consists of remixes, ranging in different styles, of songs from our 2006 album, "The Big Picture". We made "The Big Remixes" gradually available, song by song, as free downloads from our website (thesalads.com) throughout 2007. There were so many other friends and fans who are working on other remixes, but this album consists of the first 7 best remixes that we've received. Who knows, maybe someday we'll do a sequel....?!

1st blog compilation!

This is my first, of hopefully many, themed compilations presented by this music blog. In August, 2006, I started the first of what would be 9 podcasts under the name Mista D's Good Music Podcast. I had fun with it, but it ended up taking too much time that I wasn't able to find. Plus the podcasting site that I originally started with only allowed me to post so many for free, so I then continued my posts on a different site, which demanded that I post more often than I was able to in order to keep it active.

I figure this compilation idea will be easier for me to do instead of the podcasts over time, on my own time, and will also give the real music collectors (like myself) the full versions of each track! Speaking of which...Here's the tracklisting to this one:

01-Mr.Brown (Clean Remix)-STYLES OF BEYOND
02-Blood Fire (ft. Dynamite MC)-THE NEXTMEN
03-Around This Town-GRAND ANALOG
04-Scared Money-SAUL WILLIAMS
05-Embolism (ft. Giovani Mark)-BRAIN DAMAGE
06-Supercool-ACEYALONE
07-Eazy (ft.Chali2na & Bionik)-ACEYALONE
08-See The Fire-KARDINAL OFFISHALL
09-Lucifer (Paul Nice Remix)-JAY-Z
10-Blaow (ft. Lindo P)-FRANK N DANK
11-Head Lock (ft. LMNO)-MADLIB
12-Satsified (Dub Version)-J-LIVE

14-Burnin' & Lootin' (ft. Black Thought)-BOB MARLEY
15-Mr.Brown-STYLES OF BEYOND

Joe Gibbs R.I.P.

I just read that Joe Gibbs (legendary Jamaican reggae engineer/ producer/ record label founder) just died a few days ago. Very sad loss. He died of a heart attack at the age of 65. He created many of the big roots and rocksteady riddims of the late 60's and early 70's and continued to produce hit after hit into the 80's dancehall era.

Check out this great collection, released on Soul Jazz, of some of his best works. Classics like Culture's "Two Sevens Clash" and "See Them A Come", Junior Murvin's "Cool Out Son", Dennis Brown's "I'm Coming Home" ... ooooh, deadly stuff!

The Congos

This one's for the folks who've been voting on my poll, and wanna see more reggae posts. Hope you dig!

This album, "Heart Of The Congos" by The Congos, is an amazing roots reggae vocal album from 1977, one of my favourite years in music. ;) This particular re-release came out in 1996 on the Blood & Fire label, and added a 2nd cd consisting of 5 bonus b-sides and remixes.

How can you go wrong with a cast of performers like this:

Mixing Engineer & Producer : Lee Perry
Vocals : The Congos & Cedric Myton & Congo Ashanti Roy
Backing Vocals : The Meditations & Watty Burnett & Gregory Isaacs & Earl Morgan & Barry Llewellyn & Candy McKenzie
Drums : Sly Dunbar & Mikey Boo Richards & Paul Douglas
Bass : Boris Gardiner & Geoffrey Chung
Rhythm Guitar : Robert Johnson
Lead Guitar : Ernest Ranglin
Piano : Keith Sterling
Organ : Winston Wright
Percussions : Lee Perry & Skully & Sticky

Craaaaazy good reggae. One of my all-time favourites for sure. Enjoy!
